A laptop is powered by AC and DC power. AC means alternating current, and DC means direct current. A laptop’s power cord carries high voltage alternating current electricity from an outlet into the AC adaptor. AC power cannot directly power a laptop, so the AC adaptor converts the electricity into low voltage DC power that is carried to the end of the cord and into the DC port on the side of the laptop.
If your laptop won’t charge, the dc jack is loose, your laptop will only charge if you hold the cord at a special angle, or the plug just about falls out of the jack, then your power jack probably needs to be replaced.
Most service centers don’t want to deal with this problem on a micro repair basis. They will either tell you the machine is not repairable or that it needs a new motherboard. Repairs like this usually run from $250 to as much as $500. They choose to ignore the fact that a broken power jack can be repaired without a motherboard replacement.

Before the repair can be performed, the computer has to be completely broken down back to the individual pieces from which it was originally assembled and the motherboard needs to be removed. In most laptops, the laptop jack then has to have the pins delicately desoldered, removed from the motherboard, the motherboard cleaned, a new jack is inserted into the motherboard .
